Garment manufacturing is a major production activity in South 24 Pgns of West Bengal and has a tremendous potential for growth. There are several small and medium scale enterprise which are trying to scale up operations and also rise in the value chain. One of the challenges for this growth is the lack of trained manpower.
DCBS started a training program form women in Ready Made Garments in 2013. The unit has so far trained 252 women in cutting, sewing and hand embroidery. Certificates are given out to the trainees at the end of the 1 year course.
DCBS has also tried to further assist these trainees in their development as entrepreneurs and have also created market linkages for them. DCBS is registered with ‘Mahilla EHAT’ which is portal run by Ministry of Women and Child Development (Govt of India), to create market linkages for these budding entrepreneurs.
DCBS is now trying to bring a holistic approach in developing this Training unit to bring it at par with global standards. Through collaboration with designers, experts in garment industry , procurement of latest machinery for training purposes, to focusing on branding the product lines and finding sustainable market access , DCBS hopes to transform the garment manufacturing industry in South 24 pgns.
